Dear friends of the California wild,
Autumn’s warm days and crisp nights are welcome relief after the many hot days of this summer. Leaves are falling and everywhere are the indications of buttoning up for winter, as people lay in their firewood and clean their gutters, and as birds migrate both away to the south and arriving from the north. It’s a beautiful time to live in California.
Of course, we’re all on the edges of our seats over the upcoming elections. The results could have profound implications—positive or negative—for the nation’s public lands and natural landscapes. It is essential that all of us who care about these things go to the polls this year; indeed, it may be the most important election of our lifetimes.
CalWild’s efforts to protect our most important natural landscapes and waterways have redoubled in recent weeks as the sprint to achieve national monument designations and stave off damaging legislation in Congress has reached its final leg. We are still optimistic that the Chuckwalla, Sattitla and Kw’tsan National Monuments will be declared by the President after the dust of the elections has settled, but until they are, it’s our role to keep organizing, keep communicating, keep pushing.
In this, we rely on you, our stalwart CalWild supporters, to keep us working and making progress. It has already been a banner year for conservation achievements we have worked hard to put in place, like the expansions of the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument and the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and the approval of the BLM Public Lands Rule. But there is much more to be done, and we are hard at work to ensure that it happens.
