From the Executive Director’s Desk–June 2024

Dear friends of California’s wild places,

It’s been a remarkable spring here at CalWild, with many accomplishments and more likely to come:

  • In April, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced its new Public Lands Rule, placing conservation and recreation on equal footing with extraction industries on lands the Bureau manages. CalWild, working in a broad nationwide coalition, has pressed for this rule for years.

  • In May, President Biden, wielding his power under the Antiquities Act, responded to two CalWild-led organizing efforts to expand National Monuments by expanding both the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument and the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument. CalWild Policy Director Ryan Henson was invited to the White House to witness the signing.

  • This month, a concerted scramble by California’s conservation community including CalWild led to the last-minute scrapping of a proposed elimination of the Habitat Conservation Fund, an essential funding source for land protection and restoration in our state.

In each case, CalWild’s combination of grassroots savvy and trusted relationships with elected officials and agency leaders has made a difference for California’s wild places. Future generations of residents and visitors will benefit not only from beauty and recreation in such places, but the clear air, clean water, biological diversity and reductions in carbon pollution that they provide.

On a personal note, I am pleased to report that after six months in the interim Executive Director role, CalWild’s Board of Directors voted unanimously to appoint me to the permanent position in early June. I am honored and excited to take up this work for all of us who care about California’s wilderness, outdoor recreation opportunities and thriving ecosystems, and to work with CalWild’s exemplary team.

It is your help that enables CalWild to carry this work forward and steadily, effectively protect our most wild and beautiful places. THANK YOU for supporting CalWild!
