Wild Harvest: Farming for Wildlife and Profitability Wild Harvest: Farming for Wildlife and
Profitability
California is the nation's largest agricultural producer and the state with the most biodiversity,
including more endangered species than any state but Hawaii. Much of the habitat needed by California's native
species is on private land. Yet economic pressures make it difficult for many farmers and ranchers to protect
wildlife habitat on their lands -- or even to hold onto their lands in the face of urban sprawl. |
|
For conservation to work, landowners and agricultural producers must view the preservation of
habitat as economically beneficial. This report offers policy recommendations to encourage the preservation of
working farmland and natural ecosystems, provide financial incentives for habitat enhancement, improve the delivery
of conservation incentive programs, and remove disincentives to habitat stewardship on private land -- so that
California can enhance the habitat value of agricultural lands while ensuring the profitability of California's
agricultural producers.
