Sugarloaf
Mountain (9,952') is the heart of this potential wilderness area. The steep terrain
is fairly well dissected. Beyond the magnificent pine forest are woodland chaparral
and open areas. Large areas of barren rock scree and large scenic rock outcroppings
appear on the slopes of Sugarloaf. These rock outcroppings are what give this
majestic mountain its distinctive character. As its name implies, Sugarloaf
appears as a massive rounded lump on the main divide between Big Bear Valley
and the Santa Ana River Canyon. The visitor's reward is stupendous views of
both valleys and the surrounding mountains.
Recreation activities in the area include hiking and horseback riding in the summer and crosscountry
skiing in the winter on the many trails that traverse both Wild Horse Creek and Green Canyon.
Access:
- Hwy 38 east of Big Bear, right on 2N84, straight onto 2N93
- or, Hwy 38 from Redlands, past Barton Flat to Wildhorse Creek
- Sugarloaf access trails include: 1. Green Canyon to Sugarloaf,
and 2. Sugarloaf via Wildhorse Creek.
