South Fork San Jacinto Potential Wilderness

Size: Approximately 8,895 acres.
Location: San Bernardino County, east of Hemet, south of Idyllwild.
Description:
- South Fork of the San Jacinto River Canyon
- Outstanding views of the San Jacinto Mountains to the northeast
- Premier wildflower area
- South Fork Trail
- Key habitat for mountain lion, mule deer and other wildlife that rely on the area's lush streamside
habitat.
- Excellent opportunities for hiking, hunting, fishing and camping.
- Sensitive species include least Bell's vireo, arroyo toad (probable)
- Mountain biking is popular along the perimeter
South
Fork is heavily inhabited by mountain lion, mule deer and the many wildlife
species drawn to the lush habitat along the river. The area is exceptionally
wild. Additionally, along the northern boundary (downstream), least Bell's vireo
and most probably arroyo toad exist along the river. South Fork is a popular
recreation destination with about 13,000 recreation visitor days from hikers,
hunters, fishermen and campers. They experience rounded ridges that slope into
deep gorges created by the San Jacinto River's south fork.
Access:
The proposed South Fork Wilderness can be reached from Hwy 74
near Idyllwild, which lies along a portion of the area's northern
border.
