Location: San Bernardino County, near Wrightwood, Los Angeles County near San Gabriel River.
Description:
- Prime summer range and migration routes for the San Gabriel (Nelson) bighorn sheep herd
that is federally endangered.
- Home to deer, trout, and the California spotted owl (classified federally as a sensitive species).
- Contains the headwaters of Lytle Creek and associated forks that have been recommended for Wild and
Scenic Status. Also includes the headwaters of San Gabriel River's North Fork.
- Outstanding scenic vistas
- Excellent backcountry recreation opportunities throughout the year
- Pacific Crest Trail
The
scenery in this basin is outstanding particularly when there is snow on the
slopes and the river and streams are overflowing with water. It is often photographed
as seen in the above photo shot by local photographer Roy Murphy. This area
contains significant deer habitat and a portion of the San Gabriel bighorn sheep
population. The streams support trout. Spotted owls make use of the steep wooded
canyons. At the northern edge of the proposed wilderness addition, the Pacific
Crest Trail follows Upper Lytle Creek Ridge to Wright Mountain. The southwestern
section includes the very beautiful Cattle Canyon and Cattle Stream, both of
which are Areas of High Ecological Significance.
Access:
- From Highway 2 or Highway 15 access Lone Pine Canyon Road
- From Highway 15 use Lytle Creek Road
- Stockton Flat to Baldy Notch follows the eastern border
- From Lytle Creek Rd - take road 3N06 to Pacific Crest Trail
- From the City of Azusa, follow Azusa Drive to San Gabriel Canyon
Road
