Cahuilla Mountain Potential Wilderness

Size: Approximately 7,131 acres
Location: Riverside County, near Anza
Trail access : Juan Flat trail to Cahuilla Mtn.
Highway access : From Anza, Hwy 71 continue west 3.75 miles to Cary Road. Turn north to Juan Diego Flat trial head.
Location: This proposed wilderness is located in the southwestern corner of the San Jacinto Ranger District. It is bounded on the west, south and east sides by the Forest boundary and on the north by Forest Service road 7S04. The Cahuilla Indian Reservation abuts the area on the southeastern corner.

- Research Natural Area for Coulter pine and black oak
- Mountain Cahuilla Indian cultural sites
- Historic home to Helen Hunt Jackson’s Ramona
- Home to cougar, deer, quail among others
- Popular hunting, hiking, backpacking and rockhounding area
The centerpiece of the proposed wilderness is the mountain itself,
whose stony battlements face southward, rising in lonely isolation about Cahuilla
Valley. This area is the setting for one of the most famous novels of early
California history -- Helen Hunt Jackson's Ramona, published in 1884.
Juan Diego Flat, just to the northeast of the mountain, is the former home of
Juan Diego, his wife Ramona Lubo, and their small child There are many other
cultural sites on the mountain that may be accepted for the National Register
of Historical Places.
