Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Southern Sierra

The majority of public lands in the southern Sierra region is either designated or unprotected wilderness. The region contains approximately 880,000 acres of unprotected wilderness, including groves of giant Sequoia trees, oak woodlands, and free flowing rivers. The Sequoia forests are a popular destination not only for valley residents from Visalia and Bakersfield, but also from wilderness seekers in the Los Angeles area. This region contains an unusual array of wild places. Kings Canyon, which forms the border of the Sierra and Sequoia National Forests, is one of the deepest canyons in all of North America (up to 8,000 feet deep), and contains several unprotected wilderness areas, while Mt. Whitney is the highest peak in the continental United States.

The southern Sierra remains much like it was when John Muir dubbed the Sierra the "Range of Light." Along the Kern Plateau, the Rincon potential addition to the Golden Trout Wilderness embraces the upper stretches of the Kern River and is extremely popular among hikers, backpackers, and horsepackers seeking the solitude of high-mountain Sierra forests. The Kern Plateau also contains Monache Meadows. At several square miles in size, Monache is the largest meadow in the Sierra Nevada.
