Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Walker Ridge Potential Wilderness

Managing agency: Bureau of Land Management, Ukiah District.

Location: North of Highway 20, Colusa and Lake counties.

Size: Approximately 7,000 acres.

Description: The area shelters the second-largest wintering bald eagle (a state-listed endangered species) population in California as well as habitat for Swainson’s hawk (a state-listed threatened species), and peregrine falcon (a state-listed endangered species). The area is seriously threatened by road construction associated with a proposed wind energy development, and the BLM had recently agreed to conduct a wilderness inventory for the region as part of the environmental impact statement for the development. Now, due to Secretary of Interior Gale Norton's revocation of the BLM's wilderness handbook, this necessary and perfectly logical analysis is prohibited.
