Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Northwest California

Northwest California contains the most unprotected wilderness land of any region in the state. Each of northwest California's national forests contains significant parcels of undesignated wilderness. Several of these areas, including the Orleans Mountain additions to the Trinity Alps Wilderness, are among the most threatened areas in the state. The region's Bureau of Land Management holdings also contain significant parcels of undesignated wilderness, including Cache Creek and the King Range, both of which have increased in size due to government acquisition since agency surveys were completed. The region contains approximately 1.53 million acres of potential wilderness.

From the pleasant, oak studded hills and rugged canyons of Cache Creek to the glorious high country of the Siskiyou Crest, the potential new wilderness areas of northwestern California are among the most ecologically diverse and remote areas in the state. Drained by the Sacramento, Trinity, Eel, Smith,Klamath, and other major rivers, the region is also home to California's largest remaining salmon and steelhead trout populations. Protecting the region's wild lands and rivers is essential to preserving and restoring these and other important plant and wildlife species.
