Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Northeast California

Northeastern California contains such incredibly diverse wild areas as the richly forested, lava laden Medicine Lake Highlands, and the rolling grasslands and sage dappled peaks of the Skedaddle Mountains. These are among California's least visited wild places, not because they are lacking in recreational potential or scenery, but simply because they are far from all of California's major population centers. This is both a great region to get away from it all, and a place that needs more friends to help protect its ecological wonders.

The region with the highest amount of public land and least designated wilderness is northeast California. The region contains an abundance of unprotected wilderness, with just over 910,000 acres.
