Coast Ridge Addition to the Ventana Wilderness
Size:
Approximately 2,130 acres
Managing agency: Monterey District, Los Padres National Forest
Description: Stretching along the east side of the Coast Ridge
for nearly eight miles, the area is notable for its many magnificent stands of old-growth redwood.
Other tree species include conifers, tanoak, madrone, and a variety of other broadleaf species.
Several perennial streams originate within the addition and wind their way through steep canyons
to join with the Wild and Scenic Big Sur River, located within the adjacent Ventana Wilderness.
On
the slopes that comprise the upper portion of this addition, numerous meadows
intermingle with the redwoods that tower over the landscape. The ridgelines
afford sweeping views of the 4,853-foot Ventana Double Cone and the interior
of the Ventana Wilderness.
