Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Caliente Mountain Potential Wilderness

Managing agency: Bureau of Land Management, Bakersfield Field Office

Size: Approximately 24,680 acres

Location: 50 miles southeast of San Luis Obispo in San Luis Obispo County.

Description: This sprawling natural area, recently designated a National Monument. is known for spectacular views of the San Andreas Fault, spring wildflowers, abundant bird life, and rare native species.

Rugged Caliente Mountain, located in the western portion of the Carrizo Plain National Monument, towers over the plain below. Caliente Mountain is the highest peak in San Luis Obispo County at 5,106 feet in elevation.

A hiking trail stretches for some eight miles along the crest of this mountain range and features spectacular views of both the Carrizo Plain and the Temblor Mountains located to the east. Where the mountains meet the plain, picturesque sandstone outcrops grace the landscape.
