Defense of the Wild
From the
deserts of southern California to northern California's ancient
forests, scenic and ecologically invaluable places are threatened by
logging, oil exploration, off-road vehicle use, mining, and other
unwise uses.
The California Wilderness Coalition's Defense of the
Wild Program champions the protection of these de facto wilderness
areas. These lands are of immeasurable value as wild habitat, yet are
not protected from development.
The Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service
manage more than forty million acres in California. Yet protected
wilderness makes up only a fraction of that land. The rest of it can be
logged, roaded, mined, or otherwised degraded.
Our staff work with local communities, businesspeople,
activists, decision makers, and agencies to battle land-use plans that
are harmful to California's last wild places.
In 2003, the
Bush Administration stripped the Bureau of Land Management's of its
ability to inventory or protect wilderness. CWC has stepped up to the plate to protest the opening of
BLM wildlands to logging, mining, off-road vehicles, and other forms of
development. In addition, we are fighting destructive road proposals across National Parks,
wilderness across California. Recent campaigns also include
opposing the weakening
of national forest laws, and fighting to protect the Sierra Nevada and Giant
Sequoia National Monument.
