Desert Advocacy

CWC is currently working on important desert conservation issues such as Bureau of Land Management regional plans, wilderness management, destructive road proposals in national parks and wilderness, and threats to unprotected desert wilderness.

Significant threats to cultural, recreational, and biological resources on both private and public lands in the California desert remain and new ones arise every day. Despite the breadth of the legislative protections afforded by the 1994 California Desert Protection Act, these protections only apply to 40% of the region's public lands, and have not yet been completely realized.

CWC is planning a desert symposium in which key desert conservation issues and strategies will be addressed.

Several unprotected wilderness areas remain in the desert. Some of these are currently proposed for wilderness designation in Senator Barbara Boxer's California Wild Heritage Act.
