South Fork Merced Proposed Wilderness

Managing agencies: Sierra National Forest

Size: Approximately 39,360 acres.

Location: Just west of Yosemite, south of El Portal, Mariposa County.

Description:

  • The South Fork Merced area contains several plant species that are considered rare in California.
  • This area is home to the endangered limestone salamander.
  • The South Fork Merced, which flows through this area, is a federal Wild & Scenic River.

At the heart of this area is the South Fork of the Merced River, a California Wild Trout Stream and National Wild & Scenic River. The trails that wind through this remote canyon offer remarkable views including Iron Mountain Fall, several lush natural gardens, black oak forests, a breathtaking spring wildflower display, and wonderful river views at each step of the trail. Wildflower displays attract thousands of hikers each year, many of whom visit the Bishop Creek Ponderosa Pine Research Natural Area and the Devil's Peak Botanical Area. Several hiking trails exist, and river-related recreation is also very popular along the South Fork of the Merced.

Rare plants include Congdon's woolly sunflower, Yosemite onion, and Congdon's lewisia. This canyon is also home to the endangered limestone salamander.
