Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

San Antonio Addition to the Ventana Wilderness

Managing agency: Los Padres National Forest

Size: Approximately 3,973 acres.

Description: Spectacular rock formations are found throughout this scenic area in the form of large outcroppings of vaqueros sandstone. A particularly impressive monolith containing the historic Wagon Cave is located at the eastern edge of the addition. This unique area also shows evidence of prehistoric occupation, including several midden-filled rock shelters and clusters of bedrock mortars.

From its source within the previously designated Ventana Wilderness, the San Antonio River flows through nearly three miles of the addition. This major stream supports a thriving trout fishery as it winds its way through a deep canyon before emerging into the flatlands at the area's boundary. The river still supports a remnant population of beaver. Carrizo Creek, a tributary of the San Antonio, is wholly within the unit.
