Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Dome Land Proposed Wilderness Addition

Managing agency: Sequoia National Forest

Size: Approximately 11,200 acres.

Location: In the middle of the Kern Plateau, in Tulare County, approximately 15 air miles northeast of Kernville. West of the existing Dome Land Wilderness.

Description:

  • The Woodpecker proposed addition to the Dome Land Wilderness contains the Twisselman Botanical Area.
  • This area is important habitat for spotted owls, golden trout, and the Pacific fisher.
  • Woodpecker contains ancient red fir forest.
  • Water from Woodpecker flows into the Wild & Scenic Kern River and is important for agriculture and municipal water.

Woodpecker contains the Twisselmann Botanical area, which is important mostly due to its diversity. The area contains six different plant communities ranging from red fir forest to foxtail pine forest, to chaparral and meadows, and contains a variety of conifer species that do not grow together in any other single location in the Sierra Nevada. The area also contains several species endemic to Sirretta Peak, which is the highest peak on the Kern Plateau and makes up part of the Great Western Divide.

One of only three spotted owl nesting sites in the Kern Plateau is located in the Woodpecker area. This area also contains important habitat for the Pacific fisher. The tributaries of Fish Creek contain golden trout, and this watershed drains into the existing Dome Land Wilderness and the South Fork Kern. Protecting this area would ensure the entire watershed would be protected and water quality would remain intact.
