Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Chews Ridge Addition to the Ventana Wilderness

Managing agency: Los Padres National Forest

Size: Approximately 1,345 acres.

Description: This addition includes the upper drainages of both Church Creek and the Miller Fork of the Carmel River. The Tassajara Road defines the eastern boundary.

The vegetation within the area is diverse, with the north-facing slopes and canyons composed of mixed broadleaf and coniferous forests. Grasslands and chaparral are found on the south-facing slopes and ridge tops. Trees in the area include the rare Santa Lucia fir, which is endemic to this mountain range. Other noteworthy plants of the area include the rare Santa Lucia lupine and Abrams lupine.
