Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Chalk Peak Addition to the Ventana Wilderness

Managing agency: Los Padres National Forest

Size: Approximately 6,550 acres.

Description: With elevations ranging from 1300' to 3550', this area features rugged canyons drained by a major tributary of the Nacimiento River, the Negro Fork. Surrounded by verdant riparian vegetation, this creek is home to a healthy population of native rainbow trout. The rocks found in the lower section of the creek are a distinctive conglomerate.

Chaparral and oak woodland characterize the vegetation for most of the area. A beautiful stand of Santa Lucia fir is located along the creek. Several large meadows cover hillsides in the interior of the area. Recent fires have altered the age classes of much of the vegetation.
