Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Arroyo Seco Corridor Addition to the Ventana Wilderness

The Arroyo Seco Corridor addition to the Ventana Wilderness is composed of lands adjacent to the Arroyo Seco River.

Managing agency: Los Padres National Forest

Size: Approximately 3,530 acres.

Location:The Arroyo Seco Corridor addition is composed of lands adjacent to the Arroyo Seco River. Throughout much of the unit, a narrow strip of the Ventana Wilderness lies between the river and the recent addition. In the lower reach of the stream, about two miles of the river not previously afforded wilderness protection is included. Also incorporated is a recent Forest Service land acquisition of 640 acres that adjoins the eastern unit of the Ventana Wilderness.

Description: For some 10 miles, the Arroyo Seco River winds its way through a dramatic deep canyon. Its journey takes it over waterfalls and through stunning steep walled gorges with deep pools sculpted into the rock by the river's passage. In more gentle terrain, it meanders through the lush riparian habitat lining its banks. Steep, chaparral-cloaked slopes rise 1600' from the canyon bottom to the eastern boundary of the unit, the Arroyo Seco-Indians Road. While chaparral is the dominant plant community on the hillsides, broadleaf trees are found within the drainages of the small streams that flow into the river from the uplands of the addition.

This striking river contains remnant runs of endangered steelhead trout that spawn in its waters. The red-legged frog, another endangered species, is also known to inhabit the river.
