Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Take Action! Tell Gov. Schwarzenegger to oppose logging of our last wild national forests!

Earlier this year, many of you wrote to Governor Schwarzenegger urging him to oppose any changes in the landmark Roadless Area Conservation Rule. The rule bans virtually all logging and roadbuilding in more than 58 million acres of roadless national forests, including 4.4 million acres in California's 18 national forests. Governor Schwarzenegger, however, remained silent at that time.

In July, the Bush administration formally proposed repealing the Roadless Rule and opening millions of acres of our last best places to harmful development. If these changes are allowed to take effect, California wildlands in places as far-flung as the Los Padres, Sequoia, and Shasta-Trinity national forests would be in immediate jeopardy.

Unfortunately, Governor Schwarzenegger's Resources Secretary apparently still doesn't know the value of California's roadless national forests. He responded to the federal proposal with a tepid letter that never objected to the rollback of the Roadless Rule. The governor must set the record straight right away, before the Bush Administration finalizes its dangerous proposal. He urgently needs to hear directly from Californians how outraged we will be if he doesn't publicly and unequivocally support the Roadless Rule.

What to do:

Send a message telling Governor Schwarzenegger that he must object to federal plans to roll back the Roadless Rule.
Be sure to include your own reasons why preserving these wild forest lands is important to you.

Subject: California's roadless forests need full protection

Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,

I am very concerned that your administration has not yet clearly and officially objected to federal plans to roll back the Roadless Area Conservation Rule. The rule protects some of the last best forests in California. These places contain vital wildlife habitat, irreplaceable recreational opportunities, and pristine sources of clean drinking water for millions of Californians.

The Roadless Rule was developed after years of broad public input and careful scientific analysis. More than 97 percent of the public comments that Californians have submitted to the federal government concerning this issue have strongly supported the rule. Over 400,000 Californians have written to support retaining the existing rule.

I urge you to instruct your Resources Secretary immediately to write a letter to the U.S. Forest Service, clarifying that you do not want the Roadless Rule rolled back. Please do not stay silent while this critical protection for the state's roadless forests is senselessly stripped away.

Sincerely,

[Your name and address]
