North Coast Wilderness Bill Becomes Law!
On October 17, 2006, the president signed the Northern California Coastal Wild Heritage Wilderness Act (H.R. 233) into law, designating 273,000 acres of Northern California as wilderness. This marks the greatest victory for California wilderness since the passage of the Big Sur Wilderness and Conservation Act of 2002 and the largest California wilderness bill since the passage of the California Desert Protection Act of 1994.
The Act designates existing public lands in Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Mendocino and Napa Counties as wilderness and the Black Butte River in Mendocino County as a wild and scenic river.
Congressman Thompson, community leaders, wilderness advocates, and their supporters have worked and fought diligently and passionately for this bill for more than five years.
In an effort led by Congressman Thompson and Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein, the U.S. House and Senate passed the bill by unanimous votes this past summer. The president's signature today marks the final step in making the wilderness designations permanent.
Please take a few minutes to thank Congressman Thompson for his efforts on behalf of North Coast wilderness:
