Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Please contact the Governor by Friday to help protect our forests and water quality!

Governor Davis needs to sign an important bill to protect California forests and water quality -- and we need to contact him THIS WEEK to urge him to sign it.

The Legislature has put the most important piece of forestry reform legislation on the Governor's desk in 30 years, that being SB 810 by Senator John Burton. The Governor is under pressure from logging companies to veto the bill. We need your help in convincing the Governor to sign SB 810 and protect our forested watersheds from damage from logging.

Over 80 percent of our water supply originates in California's forests. Unfortunately, destructive logging is damaging our water quality to the point where, for some people, it is already not fit to drink.

Solution:

Logging plans are technically required to meet water quality standards, but Water Boards don't have adequate enforcement authority and the Department of Forestry often approves logging plans over the objection of the Water Boards. Senate Bill 810 addresses this problem by simply giving the Regional Water Quality Control Boards authority to stop logging plans that violate water quality protection standards.

Action Needed:

Please contact Governor Gray Davis by FRIDAY OCTOBER 3 and ask him to sign SB 810 to protect California's water supply, by emailing governor@governor.ca.gov.

Thank you for helping to protect California forests!
