Protect California's forests, salmon streams, and drinking water!
SB 810, an landmark bill to protect California's water from
destructive logging, passed the state legislature on September 11 and is now on its way to the Governor's desk!
California has not had significant forest reform legislation in decades. During that time, nearly every major river on the north coast of California has been listed as "impaired" under the Federal Clean Water Act because of logging. Coho salmon have declined to just 1% of their historic numbers and have been completely lost from half of their historic streams in the state. On the North Coast, some rural residents have had their domestic water supply so degraded that the upstream timber companies have been ordered to bring them water in trucks. These same residents are experiencing more frequent and more serious flooding because of extreme damage to their watershed.
Our water quality will be in much better hands when the Governor signs this bill.
Our challenge at this point is to ensure that he does sign it.
He will be under intense pressure to veto the legislation, and we need to remind him that protecting water quality is important to his core constituents. Please take a minute and ask him to sign SB 810 as soon as possible.
