Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

URGENT CALLS needed to SENATOR FEINSTEIN, BOXER TO STOP FIRE LOGGING RIDER - Possible vote today!

CALL TOLL FREE: 1-800-839-5276

Former timber industry lobbyist turned undersecretary of Agriculture Mark Rey is attempting to cut a backroom deal with Senate leaders to insert the misleadingly titled "Healthy Forests" legislation as a rider into the Interior appropriations bill. Debate on the bill is scheduled to begin as early as today.

Please call Senator Feinstein at (202) 224-3841 and Senator Boxer at (202) 224-3553 and urge them to oppose efforts to add HR 1904 to the Interior appropriations bill.

HR 1904, the so-called "Healthy Forests Restoration Act:"

  • Cuts the heart out of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)--the bedrock of environmental law--by allowing the Forest Service to conduct environmentally damaging logging projects without considering any alternatives.
  • Removes the public from the process by eliminating the right of citizens to appeal Forest Service logging projects.
  • Promotes logging in threatened and endangered species habitat, allows logging and temporary road building in roadless areas, and gives the Secretary "sole discretion" to log in old growth areas.
  • Does little to prevent fires near homes and communities while promoting logging of our oldest and most fire resistant trees.
  • Provides $125 million in corporate welfare for industry to log the public's forests.

Thank you for your help on this critical issue.
