CALL CONGRESS TO STOP THE PUBLIC LANDS GIVEAWAY -- SUPPORT UDALL AMENDMENT

A critical vote for national parks and wilderness is expected Wednesday, July 16 or Thursday, July 17 -- please phone Congress TODAY!

Earlier this year, the Bush administration resurrected a Civil War-era law called Revised Statute 2477 (R.S. 2477) to allow special interests and local jurisdictions to convert thousands of miles of primitive tracks that cross federal land -- including old mining and livestock trails, footpaths, even streambeds -- into damaging paved roads and highways, recklessly endangering the very places Americans care about most. In California, these bogus "highway" claims threaten Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park, Mojave National Park, Giant Sequoia National Monument, Redwood National Park, the Siskiyou Wilderness, and many other wilderness areas and potential wilderness areas.

We need your help today to stop this giveaway of precious public lands. This week, the U.S. House of Representatives is debating the bill that funds the Department of the Interior. Representative Mark Udall (D-CO) will offer an amendment to prevent the Department of the Interior from allowing irresponsible road construction across our national parks and monuments, wildlife refuges, wilderness areas, national forests and other public lands. The vote is expected Thursday!

PLEASE CALL your congressional Representative today and urge them to support the Udall Amendment to the Interior Appropriations bill, to prevent the give-away of our parks and public lands. (To find your local representative, just visit www.congress.org and type in your ZIP code.) Call them directly, or call the Capitol switchboard 202-225-3121 and ask for them by name.

IN ADDITION PLEASE CALL Representatives Dennis Cardoza (D-CA) 202-225-6131, Calvin Dooley (D-CA) 202-225-3341, and Joe Baca (D-CA) 202-225-6161 and ask them to support the Udall Amendment to Interior Appropriations. These three California Congressmen represent crucial swing votes on this important vote.
