Help defend wild California from destructive road building--
send a message to your Representative to co-sponsor the RS 2477 Right of Way Act of 2003 (H.R. 1639)
Over the past months we have alerted you to the dangerous new rule allowing
the Interior Dept. to give away RS2477 "highways" that are nothing more
than old cow paths, dry stream beds and hiking trails. Though there are
still no established criteria for determining the validity of RS2477
claims, Secretary Norton and the Bush Administration are continuing to move
forward in their attempt to cut up the west into small enough parcels that
they no longer qualify for wilderness. In California, bogus highway claims
crisscross the Mojave National Preserve, Death Valley National Park, Joshua
Tree National Park, Redwood National Park, the King Range National
Conservation Area, the Siskiyou Wilderness, Giant Sequoia National
Monument, and many other wilderness areas and wilderness study areas.
Representative Mark Udall (CO) offers a common sense solution to prevent
highway robbery on our public lands. His bill, H.R. 1639, the RS 2477
Right of Way Act of 2003, allows the government to honor valid and
legitimate claims while establishing sound, common sense criteria for
determining their validity.
