Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Help defend wild California from destructive road building-- send a message to your Representative to co-sponsor the RS 2477 Right of Way Act of 2003 (H.R. 1639)

Over the past months we have alerted you to the dangerous new rule allowing the Interior Dept. to give away RS2477 "highways" that are nothing more than old cow paths, dry stream beds and hiking trails. Though there are still no established criteria for determining the validity of RS2477 claims, Secretary Norton and the Bush Administration are continuing to move forward in their attempt to cut up the west into small enough parcels that they no longer qualify for wilderness. In California, bogus highway claims crisscross the Mojave National Preserve, Death Valley National Park, Joshua Tree National Park, Redwood National Park, the King Range National Conservation Area, the Siskiyou Wilderness, Giant Sequoia National Monument, and many other wilderness areas and wilderness study areas.

Representative Mark Udall (CO) offers a common sense solution to prevent highway robbery on our public lands. His bill, H.R. 1639, the RS 2477 Right of Way Act of 2003, allows the government to honor valid and legitimate claims while establishing sound, common sense criteria for determining their validity.

TAKE ACTION NOW!

Please send your representative a letter and email encouraging them to cosponsor H.R.1639 to prevent highway robbery on our public lands.

To create a personalized message and send it automatically, go to: http://capwiz.com/awc/issues/alert/?alertid=2481101

Please also take the time to print your letter and mail it with a stamp! This is the strongest way to communicate with your Representative. You can also use the website to send emails and faxes automatically -- we encourage these IN ADDITION TO your hand-signed mailed letter.
