Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

MAKE ONE PHONE CALL TODAY TO SAVE SIERRA NEVADA FORESTS AND GIANT SEQUOIA NATIONAL MONUMENT!

Please call and ask your California Assemblymember to vote "Yes" both on Assembly Joint Resolution 11 (AJR 11) to Save the Sierra Framework, and on Senate Joint Resolution 5 (SJR 5) to Save the Giant Sequoia National Monument!

As you know, the Bush Administration is doing everything it possibly can to turn back the gains of the Clinton administration and return our national forests to the timber industry. In the Sierra Nevada national forests, they have decided to overturn the Sierra Nevada Framework plan that protected ancient forests, and plan to TRIPLE LOGGING IN THE SIERRA'S NATIONAL FORESTS!

And, in Giant Sequoia National Monument, they are planning to allow logging of 30-inch diameter trees anywhere-EVEN IN GIANT SEQUOIA GROVES-with the pretense of "saving the forest from fire danger."

Science shows that logging large trees will do nothing to reduce fire risk-it may even increase fire danger. That's why Assemblymember Hannah-Beth Jackson has introduced a resolution (AJR 11) supporting the Sierra Nevada Framework, and that's why Sen. Byron Sher has introduced a resolution (SJR 5) calling for cautious management of the Giant Sequoia National Monument.

Many important California leaders have weighed in supporting the Framework and the Giant Sequoia Monument, including Attorney General Bill Lockyer and others. It's important that the state Legislature pass these resolutions showing the broad statewide rejection of the Bush administration's plans for harming our public lands.

If your Assemblymember is listed below, PLEASE CALL HIM OR HER TODAY and ask him/her to support both AJR 11, supporting the Sierra Framework, and SJR 5, supporting protection of the Giant Sequoia National Monument. JUST ONE PHONE CALL to the local office can make a big difference... but if you have friends and neighbors in the district, ask them to call too! Please note, the cities included in each district are listed next to the name of the Assemblymember.
