Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Gaviota Coast Too Unique And Valuable For Protection?

A National Park Service study concluded that Central California's unspoiled Gaviota Coast contains nationally significant natural and cultural resources suitable for inclusion in the National Park System. Unfortunately, it also concluded that an NPS-managed designation (such as a National Park or Seashore) is not feasible at this time. It is clear that politics has trumped conservation.

You can still help: NPS is now seeking public comments on what course it should recommend to Congress: do nothing at all (Alternative 1), or at least promote state and local conservation (Alternative 2). A "do-nothing" recommendation would make things much harder for future conservation efforts: please urge NPS to recommend Alternative 2 to Congress, and urge them to reconsider national park feasibility again in the near future. Written comments will be accepted until July 18, 2003. For more information visit: http://www.gaviotacoastconservancy.org/index.html and click on Gaviota Coast Feasibility Study--Talking Points.
