Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Protect our southern California forests!

The future of the Los Padres, Angeles, Cleveland and San Bernardino national forests hangs in the balance! The Forest Service has released draft management plans that, once finalized, will direct how 3.6 million acres of open space and a score of proposed wilderness areas are managed over the next 15 to 20 years.

Last year, the Forest Service released short outlines of six alternatives for managing the southern California forests. The best alternative, Alternative 6, focuses on protecting forest health while maintaining opportunities for low-impact recreation. It will help stop destructive development such as highways, oil wells, and power lines. The worst alternatives include more forest open space devoted to off-road vehicles, increased resource extraction (oil wells, logging, and mining), and less emphasis on species and habitat protection.

Without your help, the Forest Service will hear only from those whose actions often harm our forests--mining companies, off-road vehicle groups, "open access" advocates, and others.

What you can do

Please attend an open house meeting and speak out in support of Alternative 6, the Conservation Alternative. These meetings are your best opportunity for a generation to tell the Forest Service to protect and restore our nearby national forests. If you can't attend a meeting, write a letter to the Forest Service (see address below).
