Wilderness Profile

Just three miles off of Interstate 80, Castle Peak Potential Wilderness is among the most scenic areas in the Tahoe National Forest. Home to extraordinary old-growth red fir forests and the little Truckee River, Castle Peak provides clean drinking water to residents of Nevada County.

Don't allow sacred and pristine public lands to be sold for energy development!

The Bush Administration has been rewarding corrupt energy companies by giving them public land to drill for oil, granting rights for off-shore drilling and now reversing the decision to preserve Medicine Lake. Medicine Lake, an area considered sacred to many native tribes in Oregon and northern California, is a popular recreation spot located on the Modoc National Forest. Despite the strongly worded objections of the BLM, Forest Service, and White House Council on Historic Preservation, the Bush Administration is allowing construction of power plants on up to 134,000 acres in the area. The plan would cover the area with toxic slumps, miles of transmission lines, giant power plants, new roads, pipelines, and would pollute and/ or drain the aquifer that feeds the largest spring system in California. It would convert Medicine Lake's pristine old-growth forests to an industrial wasteland.

The Calpine corporation and the Bonneville Power Administration are scheduled to receive $4 million in taxpayer funds for the project. They plan to sell the power generated from the proposed geothermal plants throughout the Pacific Northwest as "green energy." Calpine has been accused of conspiring with Enron to create the recent California energy crisis.
